Reflection, Expectations and Concerns as a Facilitator

Reflection, Expectations and Concerns as a Facilitator

The Definition of FACILITATOR According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2013).
One that facilitates, especially:  one that helps to bring about an outcome (as learning, productivity, or communication) by providing indirect or unobtrusive assistance, guidance, or supervision.
A facilitator is one who guides, leads, takes charge, communicate, collaborate and accepts criticisms; reconstruct data to enhance one’s learning abilities from a knowledge base of literature researched by the facilitator.  As a facilitator I look to enlighten my peers with well thought out data to create a discussion group on several topics related to online learning. Participation is key therefore my concern is engaging the class into a powerful discussion related to the topic. A friendly debate is also helpful to broaden everyone’s knowledge base on whatever the topic that is presented.  I expect respect and understanding from my peers that this is new for me. I do not teach for a living and therefore mistakes will occur. I am confident that I can present the data but errors are possible. Fear of the unknown will always keep individuals from putting themselves out there; but to learn is to accept the possibility of failing. Yet, the key to learning is to try and try again until one succeeds. I am expected to guide the class and I will do my best.

Final Blog for Part 2

Lesson 6: E-Portfolios
E-Portfolios is a valuable learning tool in which all students should understand how to work this tool. This esteemed resource tool will help tell the story and describe personal reflections as well as educational knowledge. E-portfolios are divided with in three categories, for students, instructors and organizational portfolios. All will help with the create ventures for advertisement. I will focus on the student and what ways they can work with this unique digital tool. E-portfolios will help to tell the story for students to give an over view of their backgrounds, accomplishments, skills, and some create ideas of exactly who they are. The personal reflection will invite individuals to learn who they are and also have questions for them to challenge their expertise. This digitized portfolio will hold a number of resources and accomplishments for the student. The student can manage their entire career and educational accomplishments. Last of all every student should understand the value and how to work with this descriptive tool which is available for students to use for discussion or promotions.
Lesson 7: Learning Theory and Instructional Concepts
This lesson presented concepts to help one learn and understand about learning theories and how individuals actually learn. One valid question is pose to learners and instructors for online classes. What really makes the classes the content or the way the instructor present the content? Good question, I feel both are important and will help to establish learning. The technology helps to improve the learning within a timely manner and how it’s presented is key. Take for example learning how to take a blood pressure; a student can read about it, look at a movie, but hands on are the key. Learning modules today will help to advance this skill with audio technology. The audio sound of a heart beat and the normal range comes together. This is an instructional concept that can help the instructor teach and advise students how to affectively take a blood pressure. Therefore instructors must know the principles of learning and what is expected of students and what learning styles are out there.
One learning style is the behaviorism; this style looks at how to control certain behavior in class or online. Behaviorism is not always positive and some behavior is destructive and allows barriers to exist; preventing both parties from learning and teaching. When online, one’s behavior is learned by the way they write and what style of writing the individual have. Take for example one student in our class is very sarcastic, some of the comments are weird, not funny and often the comments does not relate to the subject. But when I had an opportunity to actually speak to the individual; I got a different impression of the student. Expression and behavior is key to presenting one’s self; however online classes can only present what is written.  Learning how to answer certain behaviors can be challenging. Children are rewarded as well as adults.  Adults often act out and want attention and online classes will be challenging to correct.

Lesson 8: Implementing the Seven Principles
The seven principles for good practice were actually presented in lesson 7. These are guidelines that will help to support and improve learning and teaching for students and instructors. However I will go over the principles and concentrate on the one that means a lot to me. The following principles are
·      Encourages contact between students and faculty
·      Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students
·      Uses active learning techniques
·      Gives prompt feedback
·      Emphasizes time on task
·      Communicates high expectations
·      Respects diverse talents and ways to learn
The last principal understanding and respecting diverse talents is important to me because every one learns and teaches in unique ways. What is considered the norm? Is there really a normal way to learn or teach? Normal is whatever works for individuals. Diverse talent will help others think beyond the appropriate dimensions. One example of diverse learning is when students are granted free range to express themselves when working on projects for class. Take for example in nursing I was able to work on a project with obesity. Although the data was important and vital for learning when I presented the PowerPoint in class. I noticed the students became offended and some were uncomfortable and started to move down in their seats. This offended me and I was sorry I picked the topic of obesity. After the presentation my classmates came up to me and said, “ I’m going to lose weight real soon”.  I was not judging them but they took the message wrong. This is a prime example of respecting individual talents not actually going well.

Lesson 9: Online Technologies and Content Resources
Technologies and resource content helped out for the group project. In this section the group learned how to use Wiki and compose a Rubric for our annotated bibliography. This project was very interesting because we had to write on technology from the website about static and multimedia images. The Wiki tool is great for group communication and helped to express the work of all on one page. Each individual had a page that corresponded with the topic in this case it was the annotated bibliography. This can be utilized for personal usage, work or school. For example if I was planning a party and I wanted to make sure everyone participated and on the wiki page; the food and gifts can be distributed between the parties involved. The rubric was challenging; often students are not aware of how much work is involved in designing a rubric. A rubric can be analytical or the content needs to be clear with allocated points for each section. This created some issues because standards and guidelines were supposed to direct the outcome of the project. Overall the rubric was completed. Rubrics are important for students this helps them to stay on course.

Online Collaborative classroom

The last online collaborative session was a lecture illustrating how to design an e-portfolios. This demonstration helped to clear up questions concerning what order and what should be placed on the site. The lecture was informative and the visual content was clear. Overall the session was helpful.
